Should Preschools Have Mixed Ages?

There are different approaches that you can go with when it comes to early childhood education. One approach that is constantly debated is having children of mixed ages in the same class. This means that your child could find themselves in a class that has children who are a few years older or younger than them.

There are many experts who argue that being in a mixed-age group can have a positive effect on the development of children. What benefits can come from having your child in such a preschool?

Learning Leadership Skills

One of the main advantages of these mixed age classes according to professionals is that it helps the children to learn social skills. This is because the older children can learn how to look out for the younger children. Due to their greater experience, the older children will feel a sense of responsibility in taking care of the younger children.

Additionally, the older children's leadership skills can also be reinforced if they see that the younger ones are following their example and instruction. The younger children are also likely to follow in the footsteps of the older members, and they could adopt similar roles and approaches in the future.

Opportunities for Development

In a class where all the children are the same age, the opportunities to develop may be limited. This is because most of the children will be roughly equal in terms of their physical, social, cognitive and emotional development. This means that they may not have much to learn from each other.

However, in a mixed-age group, both the younger and older children will be able to learn more from each other. This could either be by observing what the others are doing or by interacting with them.

Reducing Insecurities

Insecurities usually start to develop at a young age. In a mixed learning environment, the children might feel less insecure about what they do since there will be a lot of variation throughout the group. By seeing the progress that others have made, some children can become motivated to try and do more. Those who are older can also be motivated by being able to see how far they've come.

In mixed learning environments, the children will usually find a number of other children that they can relate to, and this can give them a good sense of security. With a child care teacher that is attentive, this type of classroom can be a very positive experience for your child.
